In 2013, after years of preparing a pristine, unplanted vineyard site atop a ridgeline high on Centennial Mountain in Sonoma County, we began planting Centennial Mountain Vineyard.

Our goal was an ambitious one—to unlock the full potential of our favorite Italian grape varietals here in California, most notably Nebbiolo, as well as Carricante and Nerello Mascalese, the great white and red grapes grown Sicily’s Mount Etna for millennia.

As the follow up to our widely acclaimed debut 2021 vintage, our 2022 Centennial Mountain wines continue to set a new benchmark for Italian grape varieties in California. While 2022 was another drought year, a mild spring and timely rain in early summer and fall led to small, pristine berries of exceptional balance and concentration. The resulting wines capture both the evolving purity and precision of our Centennial Mountain Vineyard and the energy and harmony of the vintage. Together, they tell a story of vision, patience, and place, and an ambitious two-decade endeavor to bring Italy’s most expressive grapes to a new frontier.

2022 Centennial Mountain Carricante – 97 Points: Outstanding

“A stunning and genuinely surprising wine. I was amazed to learn that Carricante, a variety nearly exclusive to Mount Etna in Sicily, is being grown in the mountains of Sonoma. This is the only other place it’s planted, and both vintages I’ve tasted have been remarkable. 2022 is no exception: lifted aromas of candied ginger, fennel, and citrus lead into a palate that’s bright, slightly textured, and full of energy. The acidity is vibrant, and the salty finish evokes roasted, salted nuts. Honestly, this Carricante is better than many Sicilian examples I’ve tasted.”

2022 Centennial Mountain Reserve – 95 Points: Outstanding

“This reserve blend exhibits strong structure, thanks to its tannins and acidity. The nose is sweet and spicy, with an abundance of blackberries, dark cherries, and wild fennel, complemented by a peppery edge. In 2022, the wine is a blend of five varieties grown on the estate, led by Nerello Mascalese and Nebbiolo, with small parts of Nerello Cappuccio (Carignan), Barbera, and Zinfandel, resulting in a combination of power and nuance. The palate delivers black and red berry flavours layered with dried thyme, leather, and warm baking spices. An interesting bitter, citrus-zest twist lingers on the finish, adding tension to this bold, mountain-grown red.”

2022 Centennial Mountain Nebbiolo – 95 Points: Outstanding

“A vibrant garnet colour in the glass hints at this wine’s youthful energy. The structure is present but much more moderate compared to classic Piemontese Nebbiolo: gentler mouthfeel and acidity make it feel more approachable in its early days. The palate is generous in fruit, with dark cherries and wild berries balanced by savoury umami notes, sweet dried flowers, and a hint of herbs reminiscent of tarragon that add aromatic lift and complexity. While I haven’t explored many domestic Nebbiolos, this one feels like a genuinely thoughtful Sonoma take on the variety, with structure, lift, and real ageing potential.”

2022 Centennial Mountain Barbera – 93 Points: Highly recommended

“The 2022 Barbera opens with a mix of fresh and ripe red and black fruit, like sour cherries, blackberries, and plums. Herbal aromas are slightly savoury, reminiscent of fresh pepper, which is quite intriguing. The palate is plush, offering a generous mouthfeel that is balanced by vibrant acidity, resulting in a refreshing finish that makes this wine exceptionally approachable.”

Helmed by the same team as Rhys Vineyards, Centennial Mountain debuted with the 2021 vintage as the successor to Rhys Sicily-based Aris project. Situated at an elevation of 2,000 feet in Sonoma County, Centennial Mountain’s organically-farmed 26.4-acre estate vineyard was planted between 2013 and 2016 to a mix of Italian varieties of mixed genetic origins. The same care and attention to detail that informs the Rhys ethos is very much present here.

Winemaking nods to the traditions of Piedmont, with fermentations conducted in open-top vats, submerged-cap maceration and long levage in large oak casks. The results are undeniably excellent. Whereas the 2021s were good across the board, the 2022s are a step up, reflecting a noticeable refinement in oak usage and even greater depth of fruit. The coup de grace is the 2022 Nebbiolo, without a doubt the finest domestic interpretation of the variety l’ve ever tasted. Best of all, these wines remain incredibly reasonably priced. Don’t miss them.

2022 Centennial Mountain Nebbiolo – 97 Points.

The 2022 Nebbiolo, now in its second vintage, is exceptional. Deep mineral accents open first, creating an almost sanguine, feral bouquet of iron, tar, chalk, white pepper and iodine before blossoming into a cornucopia of rose petals and dried cherries. It boasts a classically austere build, with ultra-refined yet formidable tannins and a bright line of varietal acidity, but the fruit quality is California all the way. The 2022 was vinified with submerged-cap maceration then went through malolactic for six months in neutral barrel, followed by aging for two and a half years in cask-about as classic as it gets. Best of all, the oak integration is a step up from the similarly excellent 2021 I’ve tasted on three separate occasions this year. The results are clear. Centennial Mountain’s 2022 Nebbiolo is the finest domestic Nebbiolo l’ve ever encountered.

2022 Centennial Mountain Reserve – 95 Points.

The 2022 Reserve is a blend of Nebbiolo, Nerello Mascalese, Cappuccio, Primitivo and Barbera. It’s another totally singular wine in a range of utterly singular wines. Here, the Reserve impresses most for its textural suaveness, allowing all of these varieties to showcase their owns strengths in a harmonious, midweight package. Vibrant acids and refined tannins lend structure to a dark-fruited, deeply spiced, mineral-drenched core, while a cocoa powder finish wraps things up in style. Approachable now, but a year or two in bottle won’t hurt.

2022 Centennial Mountain Barbera – 93 Points.

The 2022 Barbera is juicy and varietally pure, but also endowed with ample structure, power and drive. Notes of blue fruit, exotic spice, black pepper, tar and orange peel all layer atop one another in the glass. This is a broad-shouldered, chewy interpretation of Barbera with a real savory bent. Classy stuff.

2022 Centennial Mountain Carricante – 93 Points.

The 2022 Carricante is a shapeshifter in the glass. It opens with a taut, mineral-drenched line of lemon-zested pear fruit and fresh ginger, followed quickly by a flicker of tropicality before delving into creamy, toasty notes and a weighty mid-palate. At once both salivating and enveloping, this is a very distinctive white, especially within the California canon. It turns even more exotic on the long, oily finish.

2022 Centennial Mountain Nebbiolo – 96 Points.

The centerpiece of the Centennial Mountain lineup is the 2022 Nebbiolo, a genuinely authentic and complex expression of a varietal with few high-quality domestic options. It was vinified in one-ton bins adapted for submerged cap fermentations before spending six months in barrique for malolactic fermentation, followed by an additional two and a half years in large cask. The wine offers a beautiful, poised and expressive nose of dried cherries, wilted roses, dried herbs and spice-driven top notes. It is followed by a silky, polished, invigorating palate with assertive yet refined tannins that carry through to a soaring, lifted and mineral-inflected finish. This is a transcendent expression of the varietal from this side of the Atlantic, and I suspect it will continue to evolve beautifully in the bottle into its second decade.

2022 Centennial Mountain Reserve – 93 Points.

The 2022 Reserve is composed of 50% Nebbiolo and the balance Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Zinfandel and Barbera, aged one year in barrique and a second year in large cask. It leads with a lush, dark-fruited herbal bouquet with a woody backdrop, followed by a polished, supple and succulent palate that concludes with a powerful, mineral-inflected finish with a juicy core.

2022 Centennial Mountain Barbera – 92 Points.

The 2022 Barbera opens with a deep, savory nose of black fruits, purple flowers and asphalt, followed by a plush, elegantly sumptuous palate that remains refined despite considerable richness. It finishes with a focused, layered and gently chewy finish propelled by refined tannins and an herbal, bramble-driven finish. This is a structured, serious take on the varietal that remains approachable and delicious.

2022 Centennial Mountain Carricante – 93 Points.

The 2022 Carricante opens with a beautiful bouquet of dried flowers, citrus zest and grated ginger, developing further complexity of pine needle and fennel aromas with aeration. The palate is silky, seamless, vibrant and lifted, concluding with a spry, poised finish that melds a tropical fruit profile with a gently mineral core.
